RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A local construction company says thieves have been breaking in and stealing tools from their contractors to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of materials over a three-month period.

Boom Construction says some of their contractors have been experiencing burglaries with minimal response from law enforcement.

Daene Boomsma is the owner of Boom Construction and said that he would like to see more attention from the Police Department and the city concerning these incidents.

”Hopefully, we can bring attention to the mayor’s office, and that’ll trickle down to better coverage, more responses, and more law enforcement in off-hours, nighttime hours, that sort of thing,” Boomsma said.

Captain Scott Sitts with the Rapid City Police Department says they are on the case and have made developments. However, He says it would be nearly impossible to monitor all construction sites in the city.

“We have limited resources, with the primary responsibility being responding to calls for service,” Sitts said. “So, it’s very difficult, if not impossible for us to stage an officer at a specific construction site overnight.”

The RCPD says they’ve investigated more than forty burglaries since October.

If you have any information regarding these burglaries, call Rapid City Police at 605-394-4131.
