RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A Rapid City woman accused in a fatal stabbing at an apartment on Surfwood Drive on Tuesday makes her first appearance in court Thursday morning. 34-year old Ashley Peltier is charged with second degree murder in the death of 30-year old James Rice of Rapid City, who is also known at Stanley Kennard III.

Prosecutors said in court Thursday that Rice received a single stab wound to the chest that struck his heart. The probable cause affidavit in the case says Peltier called police and told them she had just stabbed her spouse, James Rice, who died on Wednesday. That affidavit also says Peltier told police she did not feel threatened by him and he did not have a weapon and she stabbed him during an argument to make a point. Magistrate Judge Scott Bogue ordered Peltier held on $250,000 cash only bond. She faces a mandatory life sentence if she’s convicted on the murder charge.
